The NDA government had a failed operation in passing the delimitation bill in the parliament as this was strongly opposed by the opposition parties, mainly from South India. But it was always expected that the centre would return with a revised proposal and this was categorically confirmed by AP chief minister Chandrababu Naidu.
The BJP-led NDA government will bring Delimitation Bill soon and it will be clearly spelling out 50% proportional increase across states, says Andhra Pradesh CM Chandrababu.
Naidu pointed out that the new bill will clearly have up to 50% proportional increase in Assembly and Parliament seats across all states, including Andhra Pradesh. He said the new bill will clearly demonstrate women reservation as well.
Once this bill gets approved, the existing 543 seats in the parliament could be increased to 850 and several states will have increased visibility. However, the problem has been with the fact that the South Indian states have been protesting this as north Indian states would be getting more representation while South will go down in terms of volume.
This is the reason why several South Indian states, except for Andhra Pradesh have been firmly opposing this delimitation procedure.
The process is likely to get easier with big states like Tamil Nadu and West Bengal, delivering different political verdict in the recent assembly election. This could potentially favour the BJP the next time they introduce the delimitation bill in the parliament.
