Jagan’s dream home project, “Rushikonda Palace,” turned into a major challenge for the NDA government after it came to power. It took nearly two years for the government to decide how to utilise the property.
The Andhra Pradesh government has now taken a final decision on the future of the Rushikonda buildings. After months of discussions, it has decided to lease the property to a private operator for its operation and maintenance.
Initially, there were several suggestions from political parties and the public on how the buildings should be utilised. Some proposed converting them into a museum, while others wanted them to be opened as a public facility. A few even suggested using them to accommodate mentally challenged people.
The Andhra Pradesh Tourism Development Corporation (APTDC) has issued a notification inviting bids from interested companies. The decision follows the recommendations of a Cabinet sub committee, which examined various options for the property’s use.
The buildings, spread across five blocks on nearly 10 acres, have remained unused for a long time, while maintenance costs continued to rise. The government believes leasing the property will help put the infrastructure to productive use.
According to the notification, the property comes with landscaped gardens, internal roads, walkways, parking facilities and other amenities. There is also vacant land where additional buildings can be developed, subject to the applicable rules.
Interested companies have been asked to submit their applications by July 10. Several hospitality brands had earlier inspected the property, but expansion plans faced hurdles due to coastal regulations. With the latest notification, the government has officially begun the process of handing over the Rushikonda buildings to a private operator.
