Mark Zuckerberg Should Personally Apologize to Modi

Meta’s temporary removal of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Facebook video has snowballed into a major political issue. The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Communications and Information Technology has now intensified its scrutiny of the social media giant.

Committee Chairman Nishikant Dubey has reportedly demanded a personal apology from Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg. The panel has also asked the company to submit a detailed written explanation within ten days over the incident.

Meta had earlier claimed that the video was removed due to a technical error and restored it soon after. The company also issued an apology, saying the takedown happened by mistake.

However, the parliamentary panel is said to be dissatisfied with the explanation. Members believe the issue goes beyond a technical glitch and have sought greater accountability from the company.

The committee also warned that if Meta fails to respond satisfactorily, it could face action over its safe harbour protection under Indian law. Such a move would significantly increase the company’s legal exposure in the country.

The controversy has once again put global social media platforms under the spotlight in India. With Parliament seeking answers directly from Meta’s top leadership Including Mark Zuckerberg, all eyes are now on how the company responds in the coming days.
