A Big Wake Up Call For BJP From All Corners

The Bharatiya Janata Party spearheaded by Prime Minister Narendra Modi has suffered a major setback with the humiliating electoral defeat in two of the three bypoll seats, the results of which were declared on Monday. What is more shocking for the saffron party is that its strongholds are breached after a long time in these elections.

That the party failed to retain the seat which was vacated by its national president Nitin Nabin within just 8 months after a thumping majority in the 2025 assembly elections of Bihar is no doubt a big embarrassment for the party. But, the losses are now perceived as a wake up call for the party in the view of result developments.

Why these results gain much significance is because the electoral jolt comes at a time when the party is going through its toughest phase ever since it came to power at the centre a decade ago. This is because of the growing anti incumbency over the NDA regime among the public across the country over different social issues.

The central government was pushed to the back foot in the wake of recent issues like the NEET paper leak, widespread protests demanding accountability, criticism over theft of Ram Mandir funds and growing anger over E20 fuel. Adding to these social issues is the internal turmoil within the party as some of its leaders are facing legal troubles due to corruption.

While the defeat in these bypolls can be attributed to various political factors from its point of view, but one thing is very clear for the BJP is that the results should serve as a serious pointer to do some introspection over its handling of various sensitive issues that have garnered collective noise across party lines and states from different sections of the public.

With the countdown for the upcoming assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh set to begin shortly, the top brass of BJP including Narendra Modi and Amit Shah should quickly take corrective measures by taking the growing discontent on a serious note. Or else, the road to 2029 elections will be much bumpy and difficult.
