KTR Under Fire For ‘No Great Colleges In India’ Remark

In the era of social media, political leaders often come under attack for their public discourse because of intense scrutiny from all quarters. Just one statement can land them in soup and trigger acute backlash. BRS working president KTR is now in a similar situation for his recent comments on colleges in India.

Addressing the party leaders on Independence Day, KTR spoke about the challenges in modern India and shared that his daughter is going to abroad for higher studies like many other youngsters. KTR then said his daughter chose to study in overseas as she feels there are no great colleges here in India.

KTR then acknowledged that despite the establishment of top institutions such as the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) and Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs), many students with the means to do so continue to seek opportunities in foreign universities like those in the United States.

KTR criticised leaders for prioritising divisive issues around religion, caste, food habits, and clothing over essential developmental needs. He stated that the country lack strong leadership even after 80 years of Independence.

These comments from KTR have received a strong criticism on social media as many have pointed out why the BRS government under his father KCR failed to bring at least one top management college or university in Telangana during its ten year rule. Netizens also pulled up KTR for belittling eminent Indian institutions in which lakhs of students enroll every year for higher studies and come out successful.

A section of netizens also highlighted the economic gap between elite political leaders and average citizens. They noted that while wealthy families can easily send their children to top foreign universities, ordinary Indian families rely on state and central public institutions.
