Mamata Banerjee’s Trinamool Congress has delivered a strong reminder that the party is not finished yet. Despite suffering a major setback in the West Bengal Assembly elections, TMC has retained its dominance in the West Bengal Bar Council.
TMC won 15 of the 23 elected seats in the Bar Council polls, while the BJP managed just three seats. The Left Front also won three seats and Congress secured two, giving the result an interesting political angle.
The result is particularly significant because the Assembly election defeat had raised questions about Mamata Banerjee’s political future and the TMC’s organisational strength. This victory now gives the party some much needed confidence.
Interestingly, the Bar Council voting had actually started around six months ago, before the Assembly elections. The results were declared only now, making the timing politically interesting for the TMC.
The winning TMC candidates were reportedly fielded based on recommendations from Mamata Banerjee. The party also won four of the five seats reserved for women, further highlighting its strong performance in the election.
For Mamata, this may not change the larger political picture in Bengal overnight, but it certainly provides a positive talking point after a difficult electoral phase. The result shows that the TMC still retains influence among sections of the legal fraternity.
