Kharagpur Amaravati Highway: A New Lifeline for UA’s Tribal Agencies

Uttarandhra is set to get a major connectivity boost with the proposed Kharagpur–Amaravati Greenfield Highway, a 1,107-km corridor that will connect West Bengal with Andhra Pradesh.

The big highlight for Andhra Pradesh is that around 457 km of the corridor will pass through the state, with an estimated investment of nearly ₹32,000 crore. The four-lane greenfield highway is expected to provide a faster connection between Amaravati and eastern India.

But for Uttarandhra, this project is much more than just another highway.

The proposed alignment will pass through some of the most difficult and geographically challenging areas of the state, including the Araku Valley, Paderu and Chintapalli belt across Parvathipuram and Alluri Sitharamaju district area, before moving towards the coastal region. These are areas known for their hills, forests and large tribal populations.

For decades, connectivity has remained one of the biggest challenges for the Agency areas of Uttarandhra. Roads in these regions often have to negotiate steep hills and difficult terrain. A modern four-lane greenfield highway can therefore be a major game changer.

The road could make it easier for farmers and tribal communities to take their produce to larger markets, while also improving access to education, healthcare and employment opportunities. Tourism in places such as Araku and the surrounding hill regions could also receive a major push.

At the same time, the corridor will give Amaravati a direct road link towards Odisha and West Bengal, opening up new opportunities for trade and industry.

In simple terms, these agencies are not just getting another road connecting to their inner villages, it is getting a new economic lifeline through its hills and tribal heartland.

For a region that has long demanded better connectivity, this could be one of the most important infrastructure projects in recent years.
