Rs 730 Cr NIELIT Campus Coming Up In Amaravati

Amaravati is moving closer to becoming a major technology and education hub, with another big national institution coming to the capital city.

The National Institute of Electronics and Information Technology (NIELIT), under the Union Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, is set to establish a Quantum and AI University campus in Amaravati.

The project is expected to cost around Rs 730.70 crore and will come up on 8.5 acres in the capital region. The entire amount will be provided by the Central government as grant in aid. The CRDA has given in principle approval for the campus.

The university will focus on some of the fastest growing technology areas, including quantum computing, artificial intelligence, machine learning, semiconductor design, chip manufacturing, VLSI, data science and high performance computing.

Interestingly, students will not have to wait until the permanent campus is completed. NIELIT plans to start classes from September at a temporary facility on the Acharya Nagarjuna University campus in Guntur.

Students and working professionals can get training through undergraduate, postgraduate, PhD, diploma and executive programmes.

One of the major attractions of the Amaravati campus will be a 1.25 lakh square feet Quantum Research, Innovation and Incubation Block. It will have advanced facilities for quantum photonics, cryogenic systems, nanofabrication, data centres and startups.

The campus is expected to train around 8,250 people in five years. This includes 1,650 students through degree and postgraduate programmes and another 6,600 through skill certification programmes.

The permanent campus will also focus on clean energy and a net zero approach, with solar power and EV charging facilities. Hostels for around 500 students, an auditorium and other facilities are also planned.

NIELIT will work with institutions including IIT Tirupati, IIIT Sri City, Andhra University and JNTUs.

With this project, Amaravati is slowly building a strong ecosystem around AI, quantum technology and semiconductors. The bigger goal is to create a deep tech hub that can give Andhra Pradesh students better access to advanced education, research and global job opportunities.
