Will Revanth Face Severe BC Backlash After Konda’s Removal?

The removal of Minister Konda Surekha from the Telangana Cabinet has triggered a fresh political debate within the Congress, with questions now being raised over whether the move could create a backlash among Backward Classes (BCs) in the state.

The decision comes amid growing differences between Surekha and CM Revanth Reddy. In another major move, the government has also removed Chinna Reddy from the post of Planning Commission Vice-Chairman following complaints.

Surekha’s removal is politically sensitive because she belongs to the BC community and has recently raised concerns over what she described as injustice to BCs in Telangana.

BCs constitute a large section of Telangana’s population, making their political support important for every major party. The key question now is whether Surekha’s removal will be interpreted by sections of the BC community as an action against one of their prominent leaders. If that perception gains ground, the Revanth Reddy government could face political pressure from BC groups and leaders.

However, the Congress seems to have simultaneously attempted a social and caste balance through a series of key appointments.

Will Congress’ Social Balance Work?

On the other hand, the Congress government has appointed Gadwal Vijayalakshmi, who belongs to the Munnuru Kapu community, as the new Vice-Chairman of the Telangana Planning Commission. Nerella Sharada has been appointed Chairperson of the Telangana Women’s Commission, while Gundu Sudharani, who belongs to the Padmashali community, has been appointed Chairperson of the Telangana Commission for Backward Classes.

The appointments carry additional political significance. Gundu Sudharani belongs to the Padmashali community, the same community as Konda Surekha. Gadwal Vijayalakshmi belongs to the Munnuru Kapu community, the same community as Konda Murali, Surekha’s husband.

The Congress could therefore be attempting to send a message that the action against Surekha is not an action against the BC community as a whole. The latest appointments are being viewed as part of a broader attempt by the Congress leadership to maintain caste and social representation while strengthening Revanth Reddy’s control over the government and party affairs.

The strategy seems to have two goals, that is strong action against internal dissent and also to ensure that important social groups continue to receive political representation. But whether this social balancing act will actually work remains a major political question.

Surekha’s fresh comments about BCs facing injustice could give the Opposition an opportunity to target the Congress government. Opposition parties may seek to portray her removal as evidence that the government is unwilling to accommodate voices raising BC-related concerns. At the same time, the Congress can point to the appointment of BC leaders to key constitutional and government positions as evidence of its commitment to social justice.

Revanth Reddy Faces a Political Test

The developments put Revanth Reddy in a politically sensitive situation. The Congress high command appears to have strengthened his position by allowing him to take decisive action against internal opponents. But greater control also means greater political responsibility.

The immediate challenge for Revanth will be to prevent the Surekha episode from turning into a larger BC issue. If the Congress succeeds in convincing BC communities that the recent appointments represent genuine social justice and political representation, the government could contain the damage.

But if the issue is framed as a BC leader being removed while her concerns about BC injustice are ignored, it could become a bigger political problem for Revanth Reddy and the Congress in the state. For now, the question remains open: Will Revanth Reddy’s social-justice balancing act work, or will Konda Surekha’s removal trigger a severe BC backlash against the Congress in Telangana?
