Andhra Pradesh is preparing for another electoral battle in a matter of few weeks as the stage is set for the upcoming local body election. It is anyway expected that the NDA government would show unassailable lead in the local election, but YS Jagan has asked YCP to put their best effort nevertheless.
Coming to the topic, now, the government of Andhra Pradesh has failed to secure judicial and legislative approval ahead of the coming local polls.
The government had proposed to impose 34% reservation for the BC community in the local election, but this was not approved by the Andhra Pradesh High Court. It was made very clear that the total reservation must not go on 50%.
The government quickly approached the Supreme Court with the hope of securing 34% reservation for the backward classes. However, the Supreme Court dismissed this petition today and did not want to intervene with the earlier order issued by the High Court.
This would mean that the government will have to go ahead with the standard reservation process without any additional boons to the BC sections. Considering the fact that the BC community has historically been with the TDP, it is natural for them to look to reward the BC folk but that isn’t happening now.
With the polls scheduled for November, this procedure at the Supreme Court came at a rather bad time. But that should not deter the fact that the NDA government will clean sweep the polls in the most one sided manner.
