Tamil Nadu CM Vijay is expected to visit Vijayawada on October 13 for talks with Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu. Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan is also expected to meet Vijay, according to reports. The proposed visit is likely to focus on Krishna water supplies to Chennai, concerns over proposed dams and river interlinking projects.
For Andhra Pradesh, the key question is whether the discussions can address Tamil Nadu’s water concerns without compromising the state’s own irrigation and drinking-water requirements. The proposed meetings also carry political significance, given the profiles of the three leaders. However, the final schedule and agenda require official confirmation.
Krishna Water: The Biggest Issue
Under the Telugu Ganga agreement, Andhra Pradesh is required to supply Tamil Nadu with 12 thousand million cubic feet (TMC) of Krishna river water annually at the interstate border to meet Chennai’s drinking-water needs. However, Tamil Nadu had received only 2.251 TMC by October 9, 2026, according to reports ahead of the proposed meeting.
The shortfall is likely to be a major concern for Vijay, who will be seeking clarity on future releases. For Andhra Pradesh, however, the issue is not simply about meeting a neighbouring state’s demand. Reservoir storage, rainfall and the state’s own agricultural and drinking-water needs also influence release decisions.
In September, Andhra Pradesh halted the release of Krishna water to Chennai from the Kandaleru reservoir, citing low storage conditions. Officials indicated that supplies could resume once rainfall improved the reservoir’s storage position.
The key question is whether Naidu and Vijay can agree on a practical approach to future releases while accounting for the water requirements of both states. Any specific commitment on additional releases or a timeline should be judged by the terms announced after the meeting.
Will Proposed Dams Become A Point Of Disagreement?
Tamil Nadu is also concerned about Andhra Pradesh’s reported plans to construct dams on rivers flowing towards the neighbouring state. The issue is expected to feature in the proposed discussions alongside Krishna water supplies.
From Andhra Pradesh’s perspective, the important question is whether the discussions lead to technical consultations or requests for changes to particular projects. The implications will depend on which projects are discussed, their present status and the relevant technical details. A meeting alone would not mean that Andhra Pradesh has agreed to alter or abandon any project.
Godavari-Krishna-Cauvery Link: A Bigger Water Plan?
The proposed discussions could extend beyond immediate water releases to the Godavari-Krishna-Cauvery river-linking project, particularly the proposed link near Kattalai.
The National Water Development Agency revised the project’s detailed project report in 2023 after Tamil Nadu sought a change in the alignment of the link canal. The proposal envisages diverting 41 TMC of water from the Godavari towards the interstate border. However, the states have yet to reach a consensus on implementing the project, according to the report.
For Andhra Pradesh, the significance lies in the details: how much water would be transferred, what infrastructure would be required, how the project would be financed and how its benefits and obligations would be distributed. Any meaningful progress would require technical assessments and agreement between the states, rather than a political understanding alone.
Vijay-Pawan Kalyan Meeting: Political Interest Beyond Water
The possibility of a meeting between Vijay and Pawan Kalyan is another aspect attracting attention. Both leaders built substantial public profiles through cinema before entering electoral politics. Their interaction is likely to attract public interest, but their shared film backgrounds do not automatically imply political alignment. Unless either side announces a broader agenda, it would be premature to interpret the meeting as the beginning of an alliance or electoral understanding.
What Should Andhra Pradesh Expect?
The proposed visit offers an opportunity for Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu to discuss water-sharing concerns directly. The most consequential outcome would be a clear understanding of future Krishna water releases, a process for addressing concerns over proposed dams and a defined mechanism for continued consultations.
Vijay is also expected to participate in Vijayawada Utsav 2.0, according to reports on the proposed itinerary.
Ultimately, the visit’s significance for Andhra Pradesh will depend on what emerges from the discussions. Public appearances and cordial meetings may generate attention, but any agreement on water allocation or river interlinking will need clear commitments and follow-up from both governments.
