The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has imposed a fine of Rs 50 crore on LG Polymers Company in the Vizag chemical gas leak episode. The NGT has also served notices to the Centre, state government, LG company and Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB).
Based on the preliminary report of deaths and damage incurred, the NGT ordered LG to deposit a sum of Rs 50 crore and has appointed a committee which will be led by Justice Seshasayana Reddy. NGT asked the committee to probe the incident and submit the report by May 18th.
NGT chairman Justice Adarsh Kumar Goel has passed on these orders earlier in the afternoon and the committee members comprises of Andhra University former Vice-Chancellor V. Rama Chandra Murthy, AU Chemical Engineering Head Professor Pulipati King, CPCB secretary, CSIR director and Vizag Nero Head.
