A day after the Krishna River Management Board (KRMB) has written to the AP government ordering to stop the works of Rayalaseema Lift Irrigation project, the National Green Tribunal (NGT) has entered the scene.
Unlike KRMB, the NGT expressed its anger at the AP government and also warned that if the previous orders of NGT were ignored, there would be dire consequences. The NGT had written to AP Chief Secretary which stated that if the project works continue despite the NGT orders, the concerned officials would be sent to jail.
In its previous orders the NGT added that environment clearances are a must for Rayalaseema project and a resident of Telangana approached the Chennai division of NGT claiming that the AP government is constructing the project without any approvals.
The NGT has taken up the petition and ordered for the current status of the project from KRMB. This case has been further postponed to July 12th and the next hearing depends on the KRMB’s report.
Overall these are back-to-back setbacks for AP government especially CM YS Jagan who has taken up this project personally and prestigiously.
