Developed by ETH Zurich researchers, the gel intercepts alcohol in the digestive tract, breaking it down into less-toxic acetic acid, thus preventing the production of acetaldehyde. Tests in mice demonstrated a 50pc reduction in blood alcohol levels within 30 minutes. Human trials are pending.
