Indian boxing legend Mary Kom kickstarted her Olympic campaign in style. She won her first-round match against Dominican Republic’s Miguelina Garcia and advanced to the Round of 16 of women’s 51kg category at the Tokyo Olympics.
Mary Kom defeated Garcia by split decision with a score of 4-1. Four of the five judges had scored the bout in favour of the iconic Indian player.
Mary Kom started dominating Garcia in the first round itself by going for a lot of counter punches. However, Garcia came back hard in the second round and managed to attack a few blows. After two rounds, the scorecard levelled at 19-19.
In the exciting third round, Garcia left herself open and went on to attack Mary, which favoured the latter in giving some counter punches and win the game.
On the whole, it was a pretty dominating victory for Mary in the first round. She will next face Ingrid Valencia of Colombia in the round of 16.
