Almost after a week, India secured its second medal in Tokyo Olympics. Once again, it is a woman who scored the medal for our country and proved girl power. The 23-year-old boxer Lovlina Borgohain from Assam won the quarterfinal match of the women’s welterweight championship (64-69kg).
Lovlina defeated the former world champion from Chinese Taipei, Nien-Chin Chen, to reach the semifinals. Lovlina dominated the match right from the beginning and won it by 4:1.
The medal is confirmed for India and it is just a matter of color now. Already, Indian fans are congratulating the young pugilist for making her mark in the most historic sporting event in the world.
On the flip side, Simranjit Kaur (60kg) lost to Thailand’s Sudaporn Seesondee in the round of 16 and had to exit the tournament. Yesterday, former World Champion Mary Kom was also lost in the semifinals and bid adieu to the Olympics.
Meanwhile, archer Deepika Kumari and shuttler PV Sindhu will take part in the quarterfinals later today. It has to be seen if they assure a couple of more medals for India today.
