It has been a fruitful week for Indian sports. After clinching a historic win in the Thomas Cup, Indian sports fans now have another victory to cherish. Our very own Nikhat Zareen won the gold medal at the Women’s World Boxing Championships and created a history.
Nikhat won the gold medal in the 52kg category by beating Thailand’s Jitpong Jutamas in the fly-weight final in Istanbul, Turkey. With this victory, Nikhat has become the fifth Indian woman boxer to win the gold medal at the World Boxing Championships.
Mary Kom, Sarita Devi, Jenny RL, and Lekha KC have achieved this feat in the past. The 25-year-old Nikhat is also a former Jr. World Champion. Nikhat had won the bout against Jutamas with scores of 30-27, 29-28, 29-28, 30-27, 29-28.
Moreover, Nikhat belongs to Telangana and hails from Nizamabad. From being a normal girl in Nizamabad to becoming a world champion is no less than a phenomenal feat. She has become a pride of Nizamabad, Telangana and the entire nation.
A total of 12 Indian boxers have participated in the tournament and eight of them have reached the quarter-finals. Meanwhile, various political leaders, sports celebrities, and fans are showering compliments on Nikhat for this historic victory.
