The recently concluded IPL was a pretty significant one for Shreyas Iyer as he led his franchise, Punjab Kings to the finals of the tournament. This has been a largely fruitful campaign for him as a captain, and also a player.
After this heroic performance in the IPL, Shreyas Iyer naturally deserves a promotion in the Indian cricket team as well, and he appears to be on track to attain the same.
Reportedly Shreyas Iyer, who is already a part of the Indian limited overs team is now in contention for the captaincy position. With Rohit Sharma already retired from the T20 format, Surya has been promoted as the captain.
But still, there is the need to fill the long-term captaincy position, and this is precisely where Shreyas is promising to be an exceptional option.
It may just be a matter of time before Rohit Sharma retires from the ODI format as well, which would leave a significant void in India’s limited-overs captaincy. However, Rohit has repeatedly confirmed that he intends to lead the Indian team in the 2027 World Cup. So, all such discussions should be seen as premature.
Considering the fact that Shreyas has been remarkable in the IPL after having led three individual teams, Delhi, Punjab and Kolkata into the finals, he is going to be the natural choice for the upcoming captaincy position.
Shreyas is very composed with the bat, and he is equally good with his captaincy choices as well, and he has the numbers to show for it. So it should be a matter of time before he gets the much awaited and deserved promotion in the Indian cricket team.
