The Pakistan government communicated yesterday that the Pakistan Cricket team will not be playing the game against India in the upcoming T20 World Cup. This last-minute decision from Pakistan to boycott the game could now invite serious repercussions from the ICC.
Considering the fact that the media rights and also ticket sales would be largely affected if Pakistan decides to pull out in the last minute, the ICC could be strict with its measures. In this context, the ICC has already reverted to Pakistan and asked them to reconsider the decision.
But if Pakistan really decides to boycott the game against India, they could be facing severe repercussions. It is being reported that the ICC can withhold the revenues that are to be shared with Pakistan which will hit the board financially.
On top of that, Pakistan could be banned from the upcoming T20 World Cup, and they will have to pay back the money for media rights to Jio Hotstar.
Also, there could be several restrictions on the bilateral series Pakistan may play in the future, as many international teams might not be permitted. The Pakistan Super League could also face the impact, as international players may not be allowed to take part in the league.
If all these restrictions are implied on Pakistan, then the team could be absolutely dismantled with financial distress. This could question the very existence of the Pakistan cricket team, if it goes that far. So it has to be seen what kind of decision the Pakistan board would be taking now.
