Lionel Messi Retires From International Football

One of the greatest chapters in football has come to an end. Lionel Messi has announced his retirement from international football with Argentina after more than two decades with the national team.

The 39 year old made the announcement on social media after giving the decision a lot of thought following Argentina’s loss to Spain in the 2026 World Cup final. Messi said the decision was painful, but he feels it is the right time to step away from the national team.

Messi made his Argentina debut in 2005 and went on to become the country’s most important player. He finished his international career with 207 appearances and 125 goals. He also played in six World Cups.

For years, Messi faced criticism for not winning a major trophy with Argentina. That changed in 2021 when he finally won the Copa America. He then produced the biggest moment of his international career by leading Argentina to the 2022 FIFA World Cup title in Qatar. Argentina also won another Copa America under his leadership in 2024.

Messi came close to ending his international career with another World Cup trophy in 2026. Argentina reached the final but lost 1 0 to Spain in extra time. That match turned out to be his final appearance for the national team.

Messi also said that Argentina has a talented new generation coming through and that they deserve their opportunity. He made it clear that he will always love representing his country.

However, this is not the end of Messi’s football career. He continues to play club football for Inter Miami, where he has signed a contract extension that runs through the 2028 MLS season.
