The T20 champions of the world, India had been struggling in this very format for the last few weeks. Consecutive defeats against Ireland and England marked, a tough start to India in the T20 format under the captaincy of Shreyas Iyer.
This has been amplified further in the form of the latest T20 series against Japan, which happened in Japan today.
This was a five over due to rain affected outfield. India batted first and everyone expected them to score more than 50 or 60 runs in the allocated five overs.
But batting was pretty tough on this wicket and India and ended up scoring just 32 runs in their innings. This essentially meant that Japan need to adjust 33 runs to win the game against India, which would be a historic result for them.
In the end, Japan scored 30 runs and ended up losing the game by a margin of just two runs. They came pretty close to defeating India in the final over as just 8 runs were needed from six balls. But Axar Patel was in top form and he delivered a brilliant final over to win the game for India.
The fact that teams like Ireland and Japan are giving India such significant setbacks is a matter of concern. Far more consistency is needed for a team that is crowned as the T20 Champion of the world as captain Shreyas Iyer has a big task hand.
