Fairness Cream Ads With Racism Fight, Star Actors Trolled

The topic of fairness obsession is a never-ending tale in India with Indians having the thought of fairness = beauty ingrained in us. We have been absurdly behaving with the concept of beauty which is twisted from the very beginning. On the other hand, celebrities, in spite of being sensical in real life, they endorse fairness products without a mere zeal to end the stigma.

The fairness products firms are also profiting handsomely from the insecurities of Asian people who consider a lighter or “wheatish” complexion more desirable than a brown or “dusky “ one. The latest George Floyd racism attack in the US has moved people from all corners of the world. Even Indian celebrities have expressed their anguish and dismay through social media and stood against racism.

But netizens were quick to point out their alleged double standards. As we know, actors like Shahrukh Khan endorses Fair and Handsome, Priyanka Chopra with Garnier light ultra, Sonam Kapoor endorses Loreal white perfect and Disha Patani with Ponds spotless fairness cream. Ironically, all these celebs have raised their voices against racism in Floyd’s case.

Twitter users labelled the stars as ‘selective activism’ because they raised their voices for US racism but stayed apathetic with casteism, fairness obsession and religious intolerance in India. The B-town star have trended #BlackLivesMatter passionately along with others and the move has not impressed the fans. Well, isn’t the concept of fairness creams comes from racism? That means, we get fairness obsessed when we find one skin colour superior, beautiful and desirable than another skin colour.

Netizens fired at these stars for setting unrealistic beauty standards and now fighting against injustice One user wrote, “Bollywood: All colours are beautiful (but we will cast white actress and we will endorse fairness cream through racism commercial ads)”. However, one thing needs to be observed here. No celebrity intentionally chooses negative publicity. They obviously endorse such absurd products for the whopping fees behind. Unfortunate that only a few celebrities are waking up to the negative image conveyed by these commercials.
