India’s young wrestler Anshu Malik is still in contention for the bronze medal even after losing her first bout in the round of 16 today.
According to the rules, a wrestler who gets defeated by either of the finalists will get a chance to compete for the bronze medal through a repechage round. As her opponent Iryna Kurachkina qualified for the finals, Anshu gets a chance to strike the bronze medal through repechage round.
In this repechage round, Anshu will have to contest with the opponents who lost to Iryna in the quarterfinals and semifinals. At first, Anshu will take on Russian Olympic Committee’s (ROC) Valeria Koblova, who was defeated by Iryna in the quarterfinals.
If Anshu manages to win that game, she will play match two of the repechage round. Here, the 19-year-old wrestler will fight against Evelina Nikolova of Bulgaria. Evelina lost to Iryna in the semifinals. If Anshu manages to win these two games, she will be given a bronze medal.
Earlier, Sakshi Malik won the bronze medal in the 2016 Olympics through repechage round. Fans are hoping Anshu will recreate the same feat tomorrow.
