India’s daily Covid numbers rose to a whopping 12 per cent today. The country reported 47,092 new cases and it is the highest single-day rise in about two months. And 509 deaths were recorded in the last 24 hours, leaving people back to a fear-mongering state.
It is reported that Kerala contributed the highest number of cases, 32,803 in the past 24 hours. The Health Ministry has stressed a “smart and strategic lockdown” to curb the daily surge in the state. And on the other hand, 32 students, returnees from Kerala, tested positive for COVID-19 in a college in Karnataka, state Health Minister Dr K Sudhakar said. Karnataka has 18,386 active cases presently.
Telangana reported 330 fresh cases and the state is seeing 320-380 new cases every day for the past two weeks. Maharashtra reported 4400 cases and 183 deaths in the past 24 hours. Delhi reported 36 new cases in the last 24 hours, taking the active caseload in the national capital to 343.
At present, India is running the largest vaccination drive against COVID-19 since January 16 2021. And the WHO said it is monitoring a new coronavirus variant known as “Mu”, first identified in Colombia in January. Mu, known scientifically as B.1.621, has been classified as a “variant of interest”. Coronavirus cases worldwide have surpassed the 200 million mark.
