Mahatma Gandhi’s iconic glasses have been sold for a whopping 260000 pounds (Rs 2.55 Crore) in Britain. The deal was done through an auction conducted by East Bristol Auctions. The glasses have a speciality – they were gold-plated and worn by Gandhi himself.
East Bristol Auctions confirmed that the highest bid placed was 260000 pounds. Apparently, the auction firm had thought that the glasses would be sold for about 15,000 pounds (Rs 14.7 lakh) since it’s recession time owing to Covid pandemic. However, surpassing everyone’s expectations, the glasses were bid for a staggering USD 340000.
“An incredible result for an incredible item! Thanks to all those who bid,” said the firm who organised the auction process.
Apparently, East Bristol Auctions got the glasses from a gentleman (name not disclosed) whose uncle had got the glasses from Gandhi himself.
“We found them just four weeks ago in our letterbox, left there by a gentleman whose uncle had been given them by Gandhi himself,” East Bristol Auctions wrote on its social media page after the sale.
Not many are aware that Bapu had a habit of giving out his old and unwanted glasses to the people in need or those who had helped him. The vendor’s uncle was said to have got these glasses from Gandhi for free. The auction house said that the vendor’s uncle was working for British Petroleum in South Africa during the 1920s to 30s when he got ‘gifted’ by Gandhi.
