Elon Musk, owner of X (formerly Twitter), is set to remove the “block” feature on the platform, stating that it lacks logic. This change allows users to prevent others from sending direct messages but eliminates the ability to block accounts from their timelines.
Musk’s move is part of his broader efforts to reshape the platform after his $44 billion acquisition last year. Blocking currently hides posts from blocked accounts on a user’s timeline, with blocked accounts unable to send messages or view posts from the blocker.
Former Twitter founder Jack Dorsey seemed to support Musk’s decision, tweeting “100%. Mute only.” However, concerns have arisen about whether muting provides enough protection against harassment. The current mute function silences notifications related to an account’s posts but doesn’t prevent the muted account from viewing and responding to posts.
Critics argue that removing the block feature could be a significant mistake, particularly in dealing with toxic users. Furthermore, this change might breach app store terms, risking X’s availability on platforms like Apple’s App Store and Google Play, which require measures against harassment and bullying.
Elon Musk’s tenure has seen several changes, including the overhaul of the executive team and the introduction of a fee for the platform’s verification feature.
