Rashmika Mandanna’s deepfake video was alarming and emphasized how dangerous these AI-generated deepfake videos are. Many celebrities across the nation condemned the ‘deepfake’ video.
Days after the incident, Prime Minister Modi also addressed the issue of ‘Deepfake’ in his recent speech for journalists at Bharatiya Janata’s Diwali Milan program.
In his statement, Modi flagged the misuse of artificial intelligence for creating ‘deepfakes’ and said the media must educate people about the crisis.
The video of Rashmika Mandanna has become viral and Union Minister for electronics and Technology, Rajeev Chandrasekhar tweeted that ‘deep fakes are the latest and a more dangerous and damaging form of misinformation that needs to be dealt with by social media platforms.
The cyber laws division of the ministry sent letters to the social media platforms and asked them to remove such content or cite specific rules. Section 66D of the IT Act, 2000 says the person who used a computer resource to cheat by ‘personating’ can be punished with three years in jail and a fine of up to one lakh rupees.
After Rashmika Mandanna, actors Kajol and Katrina Kaif too became victims of the deepfake videos.
