Surgical Robot Burns Holes In Organs, Cancer Patient Dies

In the era of Artificial Intelligence emerging rapidly the world believes robots could replace humans in many fields of work, a disaster by a surgical robot reportedly claimed a life in the US.

A man filed a lawsuit against a medical manufacturer claiming that its surgical robot burned a hole in his wife’s organs while conducting surgery to treat her colon cancer, which led to her death. The lawsuit states that the robot burned a hole in her small intestine.

Sandra Sultzer’s husband Harvey Sultzer filed a complaint against the surgical procedure performed in September 2021. He filed the lawsuit on February 6th, 2024. The surgery was performed by a multi-armed, remote-controlled da Vinci robot.

The lawsuit further states that the company knew the robot had insulation issues and it was not informed to the family. Mr Sultzer is suing Intuitive Surgical (IS) for over $75,000 in damages for his wife’s death.
