Baltimore’s Francis Scott Key Bridge collapsed early Tuesday after a container ship struck a support column. At least seven cars went into the Patapsco River.
Gov. Wes Moore declared a state of emergency and launched a search-and-rescue operation. Two construction workers were repairing potholes on the bridge at the time. One was hospitalized and there were six other workers unaccounted for.
Before the collision, the ship’s crew notified authorities that the vessel had lost power. Gov. Wes Moore vowed that the bridge would be rebuilt and it was too early to estimate when and what it would cost.
The water in the area is about 50 feet deep and authorities detected the vehicles in the water by using sonar.
