The total amount collected at the 1,040 toll plazas in the country amounts to Rs 68,037.60 crore, till December 22, 2024.
When compared to the Rs 62,293.4 crore toll tax collected in 2023, there is a rise of nearly Rs 6,000 crore.
This indicates that travelling between destinations has increased in the country which could also mean a rise in tourism and allied businesses.
Of the total 1,040 toll plazas in the country, 94 were newly added in 2023-24.
On an average, Rs 191.14 crore was collected as toll tax in a day in 2024, which is significantly high compared to the Rs 170.66 crore collected in 2023.
At the same time, a distance of 46,884 km has been covered by the toll gates, which is more by 4,289 km than the previous year.
These statistics indicate that the government’s revenue through toll taxes has increased after making the process online through FASTag.
The FASTag device allows the motorists to pay tolls electronically as they drive through toll plazas.
However, there is criticism that some national highways are not being maintained in a proper condition despite a rise in the collection of toll tax amount.
