A Telugu Doctor Who Has Won Three Padma Awards

Dr. Duvvuri Nageshwar Reddy, a renowned gastroenterologist, has made history by becoming the only doctor in the country to receive three Padma awards. He was honored with the prestigious Padma Vibhushan, the second-highest civilian award in India, for his outstanding contributions to the field of medicine. Dr. Reddy had previously been awarded the Padma Shri and Padma Bhushan, making him the only medical professional to receive all three major Padma awards.

Dr. Nageshwar Reddy’s journey to success began in Visakhapatnam, where he completed his early education before moving to Hyderabad for higher studies. He completed his MBBS at Kurnool Medical College, followed by an MD in Medicine from Madras Medical College and a DM in Gastroenterology from PGIMER, Chandigarh. His exceptional skills quickly gained recognition, and he became one of the best gastroenterologists not only in India but in Asia.

In 1991, he established the Asian Institute of Gastroenterology (AIG) in Somajiguda, Hyderabad, which has since become a leading hospital in the region.

Dr. Nageshwar Reddy’s contributions go beyond his medical practice. He has been instrumental in the development of new standards in GI endoscopy and was the first doctor to introduce peroral endoscopic myotomy (POEM) in India. He served as the first Indian President of the World Endoscopy Organization and has been involved in various prestigious institutions, guiding several healthcare initiatives.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Dr. Reddy developed treatment protocols for digestive disorders and published a comprehensive guidebook for healthcare professionals. His efforts in promoting medical tourism in Hyderabad have also brought international attention, with many patients traveling from abroad to receive treatment from him.

His achievements in the medical field have earned him several accolades, but his most recent Padma Vibhushan award is a testament to his lifetime dedication to healthcare.
