A Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) driver has been sacked after a video in which he was caught watching an IPL match on his mobile while driving the bus at over 80 kmph on the Mumbai-Pune highway went viral on social media. A passenger captured the driver’s negligence on his mobile and shared the video on social media, tagging key officials, including Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis.
The incident occurred on March 22nd, during the KKR vs RCB inaugural match. Soon after the video went viral, Maharashtra’s Transport Minister, Pratap Sarnaik, directed the MSRTC officials to take appropriate action, following which the driver was dismissed for negligence on duty and endangering the lives of the passengers.
As per reports, the sacked driver was employed by a private operator managing the Shivneri service. The MSRTC also imposed a fine of Rs 5,000 on the bus operator Shivneri service for compromising passenger safety. Transport Minister Sarnaik stated that passengers trusted Shivneri, which is known for being accident-free. “It is necessary to take strict action against drivers who operate vehicles recklessly and endanger passengers,” he added.
The incident also emphasised the need for stricter driver training programs for private operators working under the MSRTC. Furthermore, those operating autorickshaws and taxis while watching mobile phones while driving will be dealt with serious consequences.
