In a bid to check the increasing air pollution, the Delhi government planning to check fossil fuel-powered two-wheelers, including those running on petrol, diesel and CNG too. From According to the draft electric vehicle policy 2.0, fossil fuel-powered vehicles will not be allowed to run on the roads. The policy likely to come into effect from April 15, after the approval the Delhi Cabinet, marks a shift from fossil fuels to electric mobility.
Even the private car buyers will also fall into the purview of the policy. Individuals owning two registered vehicles will be required to purchase an EV, if they plan to buy a third one. According to the industry data, of the 26.2 million vehicles sold across the nation, in various categories, in FY25, Delhi counted for 3% of those vehicles.
Of the 15.9 million two-wheelers sold, 2% were bought by Delhi-based customers. In the c ar segment, Delhi contributed 5% to the 4.1 million passenger cars sold during the financial year. In terms of EV penetration, the Capital stood at 12% of the total vehicle registrations. It is learnt that three-wheelers stood first in terms of EV penetration, at 53%, while two-wheelers and cars lagged behind with 6% and 4% respectively.
The policy also bars registration of new CNG auto rickshaws from August 15, 2025. Post this date, only electric autos will be permitted on Delhi roads.
Industry experts felt that Delhi state officials would face serious implementation hurdles as a majority of the vehicles on Delhi roads are registered in nearby cities like Faridabad, Noida, Ghaziabad and Gurgaon, all falling in the National Capital Region (NCR) zone, which is outside the Delhi city jurisdiction.
With the various implementation hurdles, will the Delhi officials be able to reduce the air pollution?
