Uttarakhand has once again witnessed a natural disaster. Heavy rainfall in the Uttarkashi district led to sudden floods, exacerbated by the overflow of the Khir Ganga river, which completely submerged the villages of Dharali and Khirgad. This terrifying event has resulted in the destruction of hundreds of homes, hotels, and shops.
In this catastrophic event, four people have been confirmed dead, while more than 60 are missing. Locals fear that more people may be trapped under the rubble. The powerful floodwaters washed away houses and roads, leaving the entire area covered in mud and rocks. Officials stated that the sudden rise in the water level of the Khir Ganga river in the Harsil region of Uttarkashi was the cause of the disaster.
Immediately after the information was received, teams from the Army, NDRF, and SDRF were deployed to intensify rescue operations. Search efforts for the missing are ongoing. The sudden torrent of water rushing down from the mountain caused widespread panic among the residents. Union Home Minister Amit Shah spoke with Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, assuring him of full support from the central government for the relief efforts. Chief Minister Dhami expressed his concern over the disaster and stated that rescue teams are working on a war footing. The Meteorological Department has also issued a warning for the possibility of more heavy rainfall in the coming days.
