Highway Billboard Hacked to Display Pornographic Video

Highway Billboard

A busy highway in Egypt witnessed an unusual and shocking scene after a massive digital advertising billboard was hacked to display pornographic footage, leaving motorists stunned. The incident quickly went viral on social media. Several drivers reportedly stopped their vehicles to record the screen.

The billboard is located along the 26th of July Axis, one of the major highways in Cairo that connects the city to its western suburbs. Videos circulating online showed sexually explicit footage playing on the large electronic display, replacing the advertisements normally shown to commuters.

An investigation by Egypt’s Interior Ministry confirmed that the incident was the result of a cyberattack on an international advertising company’s website. According to the ministry, the billboard belonged to a local advertising firm that had contracted with the international company to manage its advertising content. The ministry also confirmed that legal proceedings had been initiated in connection with the incident.

The ministry stated that the international company’s website had been compromised, resulting in unauthorised footage being broadcast on the billboard. It also revealed that the breach had affected advertising screens in several other countries like Iraq, Malaysia, and Brazil. However, authorities did not disclose the name of the international company or identify all the countries affected by the incident.

Egypt is a socially conservative country, where public displays of sexually explicit material can attract considerable controversy. Since modern billboards are often connected to remotely managed content distribution systems, a breach of the central platform can potentially affect multiple displays across different locations. The incident highlights how vulnerable publicly accessible digital infrastructure can be to online attacks.
