OpenAI @ India: The Big Question on Employment!

Days after launching a special plan tailored for Indian users, AI startup OpenAI has announced plans to enter the Indian market by opening its first office in New Delhi in the next few months. Recently, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said that India is the second largest market for its ChatGPT, only after the US, and that the nation had the potential to be the largest user of AI tools.

Earlier this week, OpenAI introduced its sub-$5 ChatGPT plan called ChatGPT Go, priced at Rs 399 per month, to attract the masses in India. OpenAI is scheduled to host its first education summit in India soon. Later this year, OpenAI will host its first ‘Developer Day’ in India, bringing together the country’s community of developers, startups, and enterprises shaping the future of AI.

The Indian government is also promoting the use of AI in various deparments by switching the systems to the modern technology.  “India has all the ingredients to become a global AI leader — amazing tech talent, a world-class developer ecosystem, and strong government support through the IndiaAI Mission,” Altman said.

The tech giant plans to form a team specially for India to focus on the country’s requirements and serve the company’s users in a better manner.  Students, educators, software developers and professionals are using AI tools to learn and solve their problems.

The company said: “OpenAI also plans to build features and tools designed specially for India and the company is actively hiring a dedicated team in India.”

He said that opening our first office and building a local team is an important first step in OpenAI’s commitment to make advanced AI more accessible across the country and to build AI for India, and with India.

Union minister Ashwini Vaishnaw also welcomed the move and said that the company’s decision to establish a presence in India reflects the country’s growing leadership in digital innovation and AI adoption.

“With strong investments in digital public infrastructure, AI talent, and enterprise-scale solutions, India is uniquely positioned to drive the next wave of AI-led transformation. As part of the IndiaAI Mission, we are building the ecosystem for trusted and inclusive AI,” the minister noted.

Reportedly, the weekly active users of ChatGPT in India have increased more than four times in just last year. The country also ranks among the top five developer markets globally on the OpenAI platform.

While OpenAI’s entry is set to accelerate India’s AI adoption and create new opportunities in education, startups, and tech sectors, experts caution that the rapid rise of AI could also reshape the job market. The big question remains: Will this boost employment with fresh AI-driven roles, or trigger layoffs by replacing traditional jobs?
