It has been a little over five years since the Government of India banned short video streaming platform TikTok following the tensions with China in 2020. This happened at a time when TikTok was the most popular social media platform in the country.
However, nearly five years after the ban, the platform has made another appearance in India, albeit in the digital space.
Reportedly, TikTok’s website was briefly accessible to Indian users today, marking its first appearance in the last five years. This has left a section of social media users excited.
TikTok was banned in India while it was growing at an exponential rate and being used by people across all sections of society. With the news of its possible return, social media has been buzzing with reactions.
That said, the Government of India clarified a short while ago that the app continues to remain banned in the country, leaving no room for speculation.
Interestingly, this brief resurfacing coincides with India re-establishing friendlier ties with China, sparking discussions online. Yet, it must be noted that alternatives like YouTube Shorts and Instagram Reels have already captured the short-video market in India.
So, even if TikTok does return at some point in the future, it remains uncertain whether it can create the same kind of impact again.
