In the recent times, there has been a lot of discussion happening about the regional languages in India. On top of that South Indian states have been having their own language wars at a deeper level.

While Tamil Nadu and Karnataka have been strongly imposing language mandators, the collective message from South is that they’re firmly against Hindi imposition.

In this context, a latest report from reputed firm named Ethnologue and other sources across the web has presented the list of the most spoken languages in the world.

According to this report, it is English which is expectedly the most spoken language in the world with over 1.13 billion people versed with it. In second place, we have Chinese mandarin, which is spoken by over 1.11billion as well.

Hindi comes in third position with 615 million speakers, which is roughly half of India’s population. French and Spanish come in fourth and fifth positions respectively.

Then comes the interesting addition of the Telugu language, which is reportedly spoken by 93 million people. This is nearly the entire population of the twin Telugu states of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.

It is interesting to note that there is no place for Tamil or Kannada on this list, considering the these two states follow a strict language principle and are very passionate about the same.
