Rising Vizag: A New Tech Hub with a Safety Question?

Vizag  is fast emerging as one of India’s most dynamic investment destinations. Beyond its traditional industrial base, the city is now attracting significant investments in IT and digital infrastructure. Major IT parks, fintech hub and upcoming Google data centre project are placing Vizag as a future-ready city on the Eastern Coast, aligned with India’s digital growth ambitions. With improved connectivity, policy support by NDA government, and availability of skilled talent, the city is increasingly being seen as an alternative to established metros.

At the same time, Vizag continues to expand its pharmaceutical manufacturing base through Special Economic Zones (SEZs), contributing to exports, employment and economic momentum. This dual growth in both traditional manufacturing and new-age digital sectors highlights the city’s changing economic profile that is similar to what Hyderabad was able to succeed in.

However, recent reports of accidents in certain pharma units have brought attention to the importance of industrial safety. While these incidents are limited to specific cases and do not represent the entire sector, their recurrence has raised concerns among citizens.

Last time a similar incident happened with the LG Polymers factory blast that led to gasleak killing 13 people during the COVID-19 lockdown. Now this recent trend of accidents worries people that such a similar tragedy could happen.

It is important to approach this issue with balance. Rapid industrialisation can sometimes stretch and affect the oversight of looking into everything, but it also creates an opportunity to strengthen them. Many companies in Vizag adhere to safety norms, yet even isolated lapses underline the need for continuous vigilance.

For a city aspiring to become a major hub for IT investments and data centres where reliability, uptime, and risk management are critical for maintaining a strong culture of safety across all sectors is essential. Investor confidence today doesn’t depend only on benefits or incentives as it also depends on how well things are managed and how stable and reliable the system is.

Vizag’s growth story remains promising. By reinforcing safety practices alongside its push for innovation and investment, the city can ensure that its development is both sustainable and trusted.
