Amazon, Oracle, Google, BBC Firing Massively: What’s Happening?

Since the start of 2025, the volume of the layoffs and sizing down operations at mega companies worldwide has been alarmingly big. The list includes several companies like Amazon, Oracle, Google, Meta, and now BBC.

Last night, it was confirmed that BBC is firing 2000 workers globally, and this happens to be the biggest layoff operation in the company history.

On one hand, several leading companies have been saying that the AI integration and dependency on machine learning is the reason behind this reduction in human workforce. But at the same time, there is this moral question about prioritising AI over humans who actually need financial resources to survive.

It isn’t like these sizing down operations are minimal or sustainable in nature either. Companies have been literally firing tens of thousands of employees almost on a monthly basis, and this is never going to be a good sign for the human workforce globally.

Recently, there were reports that several employees arrived at the Oracle offices in the US after getting fired from their jobs as they were unable to comprehend the reason. If there could be more such protests and signs of fightback, the consequences on global companies could be huge.

For now, there is this extreme volatility in the situation as no one is certain how long human jobs would last considering the kind of technological advancements in the AI industry and increasing dependence of global companies on this prospect.
