A special court in Pune has sentenced a 65 year old man to death for the rape and murder of a three year old girl. The judgment was delivered just two months after the shocking crime, drawing attention for the speed of the trial.
The incident took place in a village near Pune where the child went missing while playing outside her home. Her body was later found, triggering widespread outrage across Maharashtra.
Police launched a swift investigation and arrested the accused soon after the crime. CCTV footage, DNA evidence, forensic reports and witness statements became key pieces of evidence during the trial.
The court held that the prosecution had proved the charges beyond doubt. It observed that the brutality of the offence made it one of the rarest of rare cases deserving the highest punishment.
While pronouncing the sentence, the judge said the victim was a helpless child and that the accused showed no mercy while committing the crime. The court found no reason to reduce the punishment.
The prosecution also informed the court that the accused had a criminal background and argued that he posed a serious threat to society. The plea for the death penalty was accepted.
The verdict has been welcomed by many as an example of speedy justice in a horrific crime. The victim’s family expressed hope that the judgment would serve as a strong deterrent against crimes involving children.
