Assam Floods: 68 Dead, 6 Lakh Affected!

Like every year, monsoons have caused irreparable loss to some parts of the country. This year, Assam faced the wrath of floods. Heavy rains and overflowing rivers have caused severe damage across Assam.

The total number of lives lost to these floods has now risen to 68, according to recent updates from state disaster officials. While floodwaters have begun to recede in some areas, more than six lakh residents across ten districts are still dealing with severe disruption and displacement.

Sivasagar, Charaideo, and Jorhat remain among the worst hit districts in the state. Hundreds of villages are still submerged under water, leaving thousands of families cut off from basic roads. Key rivers, including the Dikhou and Dhansiri, have crossed their safety levels, pushing floodwaters into residential neighborhoods and farmland that rarely experience flooding on this scale.

The flood has taken a heavy toll on crops, livestock, and local infrastructure. Tens of thousands of hectares of farmland are under water, destroying essential crops. Roads, bridges, and riverbanks have suffered heavy damage, while thousands of animals have either been displaced or lost.

Relief efforts are underway across all affected districts. Authorities have set up hundreds of camps and distribution points to shelter displaced families. To reach stranded citizens, the Indian Air Force deployed helicopters to drop food, drinking water, baby food, and emergency supplies directly into isolated villages.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke with Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to review the situation and assured full support from central government.
