Why Is China Being Blamed for the Deadly Nepal Floods?

The deadly floods in Nepal have raised serious questions about what caused the disaster and whether China could have warned Nepal earlier.

The floods hit areas near the Nepal China border on August 26. Hundreds of people were killed and thousands were reported missing. At first, an earthquake was suspected to be the reason behind the disaster. However, later satellite images and assessments pointed towards a major glacier collapse or an ice and rock avalanche.

The disaster happened near the Rasuwagadhi Kerung border area. Huge amounts of water, mud, ice and rocks rushed downstream into Nepal. This has led to questions about activities and construction on the Chinese side of Tibet. Some Nepali journalists and former officials have also questioned whether China had information about the danger before the flood reached Nepal.

However, there is no confirmed evidence that Chinese construction caused the floods.

Preliminary satellite analysis has pointed to a major glacier collapse in the upstream Himalayan region. The collapse may have sent large amounts of ice and rocks downhill, possibly blocking the river for some time before a sudden rush of water and debris moved downstream.

The bigger question is whether China could have warned Nepal earlier. Some experts believe better monitoring and information sharing between the two countries could help save lives in such dangerous Himalayan areas. At the same time, the disaster happened very quickly, making an early warning difficult.

China has rejected the allegations. The Chinese Embassy in Nepal said claims that a geological disaster dam on the Chinese side caused the floods were false. Beijing also denied that it failed to issue an early warning.

For now, there is no clear evidence that China caused the floods. A glacier collapse appears to be the main reason behind the disaster. But questions about whether Nepal could have received an earlier warning from China remain unanswered.

The tragedy also shows the growing danger of unstable glaciers in the Himalayas. Nepal, China and India all face similar risks as the region becomes warmer.
