Anaya Bangar, daughter of former Indian cricketer Sanjay Bangar, has become the centre of a fresh controversy in women’s cricket. Her recent clearance to play women’s competitive cricket in Australia has triggered a heated debate over transgender participation and whether such players have an unfair advantage.

Anaya Bangar’s return to women’s cricket has triggered a fresh controversy after South African cricketer Marizanne Kapp strongly criticised Cricket Australia’s decision to clear her for competitive cricket.

Kapp described the decision as “absolutely ridiculous” and questioned whether Anaya should be allowed to compete in women’s cricket. Her comments have now sparked a wider debate over transgender participation and fairness in sport.

Anaya has responded strongly to the criticism, asking those opposing her participation to educate themselves before making judgments. She maintained that her eligibility was decided after following the required policies and undergoing extensive assessments.

Anaya said a 12 week assessment conducted with Manchester University after hormone replacement therapy found that her physical parameters were within the range observed in cisgender female athletes. She also pointed to changes in her muscle mass, stamina and testosterone levels.

Cricket Australia has cleared Anaya to play community and Premier Cricket, opening a potential pathway towards elite women’s cricket. She could potentially become eligible for the Women’s Big Bash League from March 2027, although the clearance does not guarantee selection.

The controversy has now turned into a much bigger discussion about inclusion, fairness and eligibility in women’s cricket. Anaya, meanwhile, is determined to prove herself on the field and believes her performances should ultimately decide how far her cricket journey goes.
