Tim Cook Era Ends: 15 Years That Changed Apple Forever

Tim Cook has officially ended his 15 year tenure as Apple CEO, bringing one of the most successful leadership chapters in the tech industry to a close. Cook took over from Steve Jobs in 2011 and leaves behind an Apple that is vastly bigger and more valuable than the company he inherited.

Under Cook leadership, Apple expanded far beyond the iPhone business. Products such as the Apple Watch and AirPods became major parts of the ecosystem, while services grew into one of the company’s most important businesses. Apple also strengthened its chip strategy and expanded its global manufacturing footprint.

The biggest indicator of Cook’s impact is Apple’s valuation. The company’s market value rose from roughly $350 billion when he became CEO to more than $4 trillion by the end of his tenure. Apple also crossed the three billion mark in cumulative iPhone sales during this period.

However, Cook’s era was not without challenges. Apple has faced growing pressure in artificial intelligence, regulatory battles and its continued dependence on China for manufacturing. The company has also increasingly relied on outside partners for parts of its AI strategy.

Cook is not completely leaving Apple. From September 1, he will serve as executive chairman, while John Ternus takes charge as CEO. Ternus, a longtime Apple hardware executive, has been closely involved with several major products and now becomes responsible for steering the company into its next phase.

The leadership change comes just days before Apple’s September 9 product event, giving Ternus an early spotlight as CEO. For Cook, it marks the beginning of a different role after 15 years at the helm, while for Ternus, the real challenge now begins as he inherits one of the world’s most valuable companies.
