Sydney Sweeney is facing backlash over her latest advertisement for sports prediction company Novig. The actress appears in minimal clothing while pretending to play different sports, with the campaign drawing criticism from several female athletes.
Four time Olympic gold medallist Ariarne Titmus has strongly criticised the advertisement. She said she was infuriated by the campaign and questioned why women’s bodies are still being used to market sports.
Titmus also felt such marketing belongs to the past and does not represent the hard work of women athletes. Her comments quickly gained attention as more sportswomen joined the criticism.
British sprinter Amy Hunt also responded to the controversy after her recent race. She highlighted the strength, hard work and dedication behind women’s sport instead of focusing on appearance.
Several other athletes have also spoken out, including gymnast Gracie Kramer and boxer Skye Nicolson. Many of them used the controversy to showcase what real women in sport look like.
Interestingly, Sweeney is not only the face of the campaign but also has an equity stake in Novig. The controversy has now turned into a wider debate over how women and women’s sport are portrayed in advertising.
