In a significant move to curb the child sexual abuse cases, the Indian government has been contunoiously asking the social media platforms to provide information related to the child sexual abuse cases. As per the reports, the Meta has agreed to provide the information related to the child sexual abuse cases to the Indian government.
Now, Meta, which owns social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram and Whatsapp, has finally agreed to report the cases related to child sexual abuse and safety to the appropriate law enforcement agencies, according to government sources.
The Government of India has earlier made it clear that the online safety of children is a fundamental requirement for any social media platform operating in India and is non-negotiable.
The government said Meta’s decision is a first step towards making social media platforms safer for children. However, it added that much more needs to be done to ensure children are protected from harmful content and online abuse.
The government is also engaging with other social media platforms such as X (formerly Twitter), Snapchat and other social media platforms operating in India, to ensure they proactively identify and remove such content.
It further warned that action will be taken against platforms that fail to take proactive steps to protect children and ensure their safety online.
