3 Scientists Win Nobel Prize For Controlling Brain With Light

The 2026 Nobel Prize in the field of medicine has been awarded to three renowned scientists Karl Deisseroth ( USA) , Peter Hegemann ( Germany), and Georg Nagel ( Germany)for their groundbreaking research on brain cells known as Optogenetics, a one-of-its kind novel concept which uses light to control specific nerves or neurons connected to the brain.

The announcement was made today by the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Sweden. The
three scientists will split a prize money of 12 million Swedish kronor, which is around 1.2 million US dollars (10 Crore rupees), for their big work in medical science and brain research.

Optogenetics has largely been confined as a research tool. These scientists now discovered that light can be used to control brain cells without affecting any other healthy parts of Human beings by using light sensitive proteins found in small algae. They proved that light pulses are used to switch specific brain cells or neurons on and off.

This medical breakthrough is very important for human health because it brings new hope for treating bad brain diseases like Parkinson disease, severe depression, epilepsy and even blindness.
Medical experts strongly believe optogenetics technology could eventually guide doctors toward developing precise therapies for many brain illnesses.

The three happy scientists expressed immense gratitude and joy after receiving the official award news phone call from Stockholm. They stated that working together as close friends over many years made this global recognition even more special. The award will be presented on December 10th.
