Asians are slowly proving their mettle on the stage of the Oscars. After the South Korean film Parasite’s incredible show last year, now a few other Asian Americans have stood out in the Oscar nominations that were announced tonight.
Korean-American actor Steven Yeun became the first Asian-American to be nominated in the Best Actor category of the Oscars. He was nominated for the film Minari. His competitors in the category are Chadwick Boseman (Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom), Riz Ahmed (Sound of Metal), Anthony Hopkins (The Father) and Gary Oldman (Mank).
On the flip side, Chinese filmmaker Chloé Zhao became the first woman of Asian descendant to be nominated for the Best Director Award. She is nominated for the film Nomadland. Chloé Zhao will now compete with Thomas Vinterberg (Another Round), David Fincher (Mank), Lee Isaac Chung (Minari) and Emerald Fennell (Promising Young Woman). The Academy Awards event will be held on April 25.
