In the wake of rising coronavirus cases in Sri Lanka, the country’s cricket board decided to call off the Asia Cup which was supposed to be held in June this year. The 2021 Asia Cup was originally bound to happen in Pakistan but was later shifted to Sri Lanka. Now, even that won’t happen as the board decided to call off the tournament.
The last time Asia Cup held was in 2018. Speaking to reporters the other day, Sri Lanka Cricket Board’s CEO Ashely de Silva said that due to the prevailing situation in the country, it will be difficult for them to host the tournament.
Asia Cup 2021 was supposed to be held in Pakistan but as India was unlikely to travel to the nation due to political tension, it was shifted to Sri Lanka. It is being heard that the next edition may happen only after the 2023 World Cup.
Due to the surge in coronavirus cases in the country, the Sri Lankan government also banned international flights for 10 days.
